Major Matthew T. McSorley graduated from Quantico High School in 1997; and proceeded to attend Shepherd College located in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.  In May 2001, he returned to Quantico, Virginia to attend The Basic School where he graduated with Alpha Company in June 2002.


Major McSorley completed Primary Flight Training with VT-27 and Advanced Helicopter Training with HT-18.  As a designated helicopter pilot, he reported to HMM(T)-164 to begin training in the CH-46E Sea Knight. 

In September 2004, Major McSorley reported to HMM-264 and deployed to Al Asad, Iraq in support of OIF 04-06.  He held a variety of billets that included:  Adjutant, Classified Material Control Custodian, Schedule Writer, and Aviation Safety Officer. 

In June 2006, Major McSorley detached from HMM-264, and then assumed the duties of MAG-29 Aviation Safety Officer.  Major McSorley deployed with the MAG-29 HQ back to Al Asad, Iraq in support of OIF 06-08.  While deployed, he served as an augment pilot for the Flying Tigers of HMM-262. 

After returning from Iraq, Major McSorley again joined the Black Knights of HMM-264.  For the next two years, he held the billet of Squadron Quality Assurance Officer while supporting a 26th MEU deployment cycle. 

Major McSorley departed MCAS New River in June 2009 and returned to Quantico, Virginia to attend Expeditionary Warfare School.  In September 2010, Major McSorley joined MAG-26 HQ, and served as the Current Operations Officer until he reported to VMMT-204 for training in the MV-22B. 

In October 2011, Major McSorley once again returned to the Black Knights of VMM-264.  As the Operations Officer, Major McSorley led the squadron through a deployment to Camp Bastion, Afghanistan to support OEF 13.1.  Following the deployment, Major McSorley assumed the duties of Executive Officer until June 2014.​
