After flight training as an AH-1W pilot, he served in numerous squadron and group billets including: Operations Officer, Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Standardization Officer, Unit (I&I) Officer in Charge and as a Functional Check Pilot and Weapons and Tactics Instructor with HMLA-367, HMLA-773 and MAG-42.  He deployed twice to Afghanistan as the HMLA-773 Operations Officer, Ground Force Liaison Officer and also led the Night Quick Reaction Force.  He served as military faculty at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia and as an adjunct faculty member for the USMC Command and Staff Distance Education Program.  His staff billets include: Congressional Fellow for Senator Bill Nelson, Congressional Liaison Officer at HQMC Office of Legislative Affairs, Reserve Integration Officer at HQMC Aviation and most recently as the Reserve Continuation and Transition Branch Head at HQMC Manpower and Reserve Affairs.
Col Thompson holds a B.B.A in Management from Georgia State University, an M.B.A in Management from Colorado State University, a Certificate of Legislative Studies from the Government Affairs Institute at Georgetown University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Air War College.
